Feed
The community's timeline. Short statuses with comments and reactions, plus everything published in the other spaces (content, events, courses, calls), with filters and items pinned to the top.
The Feed is where the community talks. It's a space running the Feed module, and it shows two things in one timeline:
- the statuses published in it: short text posts;
- what's published in the other spaces the person can see: content, events, courses and calls for papers.
Every community starts with a Feed in the Home section.
What it's for
| Community | Feed |
|---|---|
| Online school | The general Feed, where students ask questions and comment on lessons |
| Coworking | House notices (only the staff posts) and the residents' board |
| Company HR | The culture board: birthdays, achievements, welcomes |
| Mentoring cohort | The cohort's room, in a private space unlocked for the group |
How it works
What shows up
| Item | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Status | Published in this Feed |
| Content | A post from a Content space |
| Event | An event from an Events space |
| Course | A course from a Courses space |
| Call | An open call for papers |
Each person only sees items from spaces they have access to: an event from a subscribers' space doesn't show up for non-subscribers.
Filters
At the top: All, Status, Content, Events, Courses and Calls. The list loads more as you scroll, and Refresh brings in what has arrived.
React, comment, share
Each item has reactions, comments (with replies) and a button to share the link. The author edits and deletes their own status.
Pin to top
Pin to top keeps an item above the others until someone clicks Unpin. Use it for rules, welcomes and announcements.
Who can do what
| Action | Who |
|---|---|
| View | Whoever has access to the Feed's space |
| Publish a status | Members and above, according to the space's Who can post (Anyone, Staff or Admins) |
| Comment and react | Whoever sees it |
| Edit or delete your own status | The author |
| Edit or delete someone else's status | Admin and owner |
| Delete someone else's comment | Moderator, admin and owner |
| Pin and unpin | Moderator, admin and owner |
Step by step
Publish a status
Role: whoever the space lets post.
- Open the Feed and click New Status.
- Write ("What are you thinking?").
- Publish.
For long texts, with an image or video, use a Content space: the post shows up in the Feed all the same.
Pin an announcement
Role: moderator, admin or owner.
In the item's menu, Pin to top.
Create an announcements Feed
Role: owner or admin.
- Add Space › Feed.
- Visibility = Members and Who can post = Staff.
- Everyone reads and comments; only the staff posts.
Examples
A pinned welcome. In the Home Feed, a status saying "Welcome! Start with the Start here space and introduce yourself in the comments", pinned to the top.
A Feed per cohort. One Feed per cohort, each one Private and unlocked for the cohort's group. Each student sees the general Feed and their own cohort's Feed.
Common errors and how to fix them
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| A member doesn't see New Status | The space is set to Staff or Admins |
| Only staff members (admin, owner, moderator) can perform this action | Same as above |
| Empty feed | Nobody has posted yet, or the person doesn't have access to the source spaces |
| An event doesn't show up in the Feed | The event's space is more closed than the person's access |
Frequently asked questions
Can I have more than one Feed? Yes, and it's common.
