Engagement space

The community's gamification. How many points each action is worth, the levels (the nine default ones or the community's own), the leaderboard periods, the Engagement space, how to turn on the overall engagement and where to change the points.

The Engagement module turns participation into points. Each action is worth a number of points, points add up to levels, and the Engagement space shows who takes part the most. Gamification is already turned on when the community is created. The community's participation numbers are on a different page, Engagement, under Administration.

How it works

What earns points

The default values, which the owner and admins change under Members › Gamification:

ActionPoints

Participate in event20

Be recognized0

The last two come from the Recognition space and start at 0. With points, Recognize a colleague counts for up to 3 recognitions a day, and Be recognized counts once a week per author; deleting the recognition takes back the points it gave.

The levels

Each level has a name, shown on the leaderboard, in My engagement and in How to earn points:

LevelNamePoints
1Newcomer0 to 99
2Participant100 to 299
3Contributor300 to 599
4Engaged600 to 999
5Standout1,000 to 1,999
6Go-to2,000 to 3,499
7Inspirer3,500 to 5,999
8Master6,000 to 9,999
9Legend10,000 or more

The community can replace this ladder in Members › Gamification, Levels tab: 2 to 20 levels, with each one's name, minimum points and image and, if it wants, the activity each level asks for in the week (see Levels). The name and image the community chose show in the ranking, on the podium, in My engagement, in How to earn points and on the profile. A level with requirements carries "+ activity in the week" in How to earn points, and whoever already has the next level's points, but not the activity, sees in My engagement "The points are enough for Kernel: this week's activity is missing". On the profile, a requirement tied to a space you cannot access shows "in a space you cannot access" in place of the space's name (see What is left this week).

"The level comes from all-time points and, when the level asks for it, from the week's activity; the position, only from the chosen period." The profile's points and level are the person's total in the community, adding up every section: the same number as the Overall engagement in All time. The Section engagement counts only the activity in that section.

The periods

The leaderboard can be viewed for This week (7 days), This month (30 days) and All time; the chosen period stays in the page address (?period=30d). Besides the community's Overall engagement, an Engagement space can show the Section engagement: participation in that section only.

People who left don't count. Anyone who leaves or is removed from the community no longer shows up in the leaderboard, in any period (This week, This month and All time), and isn't counted in the totals or pushes anyone's position down: the position is the same in the leaderboard, on the profile and in the reports. Their points are kept and come back if they rejoin the community.

The Engagement space

Above the leaderboard, the periods (This week, This month, All time) and the count ("13 people scored in the last 7 days").

The podium. The top 3 stand on a podium, with 1st in the middle, each with their photo, role, level and points. Below comes the list, from 4th place on.

Ties. People with the same points share the position, marked with a subtle =: =2, =2, and the next one is 5 (on hover, "Tied with 2 people"). Within a tie, the order only keeps the list stable. With a tie, the podium shows the first three in that order, and the other tied people stay in the list with the same position.

Each row shows the position, photo, name, role, level ("Level 1 · Newcomer"), badges and points. The badges are the most recent ones (up to 5 in the row and 3 on the podium), with +N for the rest; a private badge only shows to its holder and to the owner and admin, and is not counted for anyone else. Clicking a badge opens the same dialog as on the member page: the description, where it came from (with a link when you can open that space) and the date.

Change in position. In This week and This month, each person shows how far they moved up or down compared with the previous period of the same length (on hover, "Up 2 positions (was #5)"), = when they stayed put and new when they didn't score in the previous period. All time has no comparison.

Names and photos open the member page. The owner and admin have Adjust points in each row's … menu.

You: #N. When your row is off screen, or you're not among the rows the list shows, a pinned note at the bottom gives your position and points for the period ("You: #12 · 24 pts"); clicking it scrolls to your row.

My engagement, on the side (below it on smaller screens): your Position and Points for the period (with (tie) when it applies), your level with its name and the bar to the next one ("46 pts to Participant · 54 pts in total"), My badges and To climb: the 3 actions worth the most points in this community. Someone who hasn't scored yet sees "You haven't scored yet. Start with one of these:".

How to earn points, a single collapsible block: what each action is worth, from most to least, and the levels table with the points for each.

Turning it on and off

In Settings › Features, the Overall engagement switch ("Show the overall engagement leaderboard to all members").

Changing the points

Under Members › Gamification, the owner and admins turn points on or off and change how much each action is worth. The new value applies from the next action on. See Gamification.

Step by step: create the Engagement space

Role: owner or admin.

  1. Add Space › Engagement, Next.
  2. Title (e.g. Engagement), icon and visibility (usually Members).
  3. Create Space.

Examples with numbers

A student in one week. Completes 4 lessons (100), comments 6 times (30), replies to 5 comments (15), logs in on 7 days (7) and receives 10 likes (20): 172 points, moving from level 1 to level 2.

An event. Whoever creates the event earns 20; each attendee, 20.

Frequently asked questions

Are points worth money? No. They're recognition. If you want to give prizes, arrange the prize with the community (a free month, a gift).

Can I reset the leaderboard? The This week and This month periods already restart on their own.

Do staff members appear on the leaderboard? Yes, like anyone else who takes part.

In the API

GET /api/gamification/leaderboard, GET /api/gamification/score, GET /api/gamification/actions, GET/PUT /api/gamification/config. See Gamification.

In GET /api/gamification/leaderboard and in the leaderboard of GET /api/gamification, rank is the position with ties (1, 2, 2, 2, 5), and isTopThree is rank <= 3 (with a tie it can apply to more than three). Each row has isTied, level (the number of the person's level in the community's ladder; also with sectionId, which changes the points, not the level) with levelId, levelName and levelImageUrl, badgeCount (all the badges the caller may see) and previousRank (the position in the previous period of the same length with 7d and 30d; null with all or without points in that period); badges come newest first, up to 8. In GET /api/gamification, currentUser carries periodRank and periodPoints (your position and points in the period, even outside the returned rows) and badges/badgeCount (up to 12 of your own badges, private ones included), plus levelName, levelImageUrl and nextLevelName. levelDistribution has one row per level of the community, with id, name, imageUrl and minPoints. The levels themselves are in GET and PUT /api/gamification/levels (see Gamification).

Through the assistant (MCP)

get_leaderboard returns the same shared positions (isTied), the level with the community's name for it (level_name), the badges with badgeCount and previousRank, and get_ranking_dashboard gives your position in the period (currentUser.periodRank), even outside the top. get_ranking_levels and update_ranking_levels read and change the levels, and get_level_progress says what is left this week to stay at or move up a level. See Tools · Content.
