# Languages

> The platform in ten language variants, how each person picks theirs, the community's language and the language of emails, and what is translated and what isn't.

Memberfy speaks **ten variants** of five languages:

| Language | Variants |
|---|---|
| Portuguese | Brazil, Portugal |
| English | United States |
| Spanish | Spain, Mexico, Argentina |
| Italian | Italy |
| German | Germany, Austria, Switzerland |

## What it's for

A community with members in several countries: a Brazilian school with students in Portugal and Angola, a company with teams in Argentina and Mexico, an international event.

## How it works

### Each person in their own language

The interface language is chosen **per person**, not per community:

- On first access, the platform uses the browser's language if it's one of the ten; otherwise, English.
- At the top of the screen, the language selector switches it instantly.
- The choice is saved in that browser.

In the same community, one member reads in Portuguese and another in Spanish, at the same time.

### The community's language

Each community has a **main language**, agreed when it's created. It's the language of the **emails** the platform sends on the community's behalf (welcome, payments, events). It also applies to anyone who hasn't picked a language yet. To change it, ask the [AI assistant](/mcp/ferramentas-comunidade#update-community-settings) (*"change the community language to Mexican Spanish"*), use the API (`PUT /api/communities/{id}` with `language`, as owner or admin) or talk to the Memberfy team. Only the ten variants in the table above are accepted (`pt-BR`, `es-MX`…); a code without the region, such as `pt`, is refused.

### What is translated

| | Translated? |
|---|---|
| Menus, buttons, notices and error messages | Yes, by the platform |
| Platform emails | Yes, in the community's language |
| What the community writes: posts, space names, plans, descriptions | No: it shows exactly as written |

For a bilingual community, write space and plan names in both languages, or create spaces per language (*Announcements* and *Anuncios*, for example).

## Step by step: change the screen language

*Role: anyone.*

1. At the top, click the language selector.
2. Pick the variant.

## Examples

**A school with students in Brazil and Portugal.** The community is pt-BR; students in Portugal choose **Português (Portugal)** and see *Definições* and *Faturação* in the menu. Emails stay in pt-BR.

**A company with a team in Argentina.** The Argentine team chooses **Español (Argentina)**. The spaces *Announcements* and *Announcements (ES)* keep the texts apart by language.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is there French?**
No.

**Does a member's language apply in all their communities?**
The choice is saved in the browser: it applies to the communities opened in that browser.

**Does the API answer in another language?**
Yes: send `Accept-Language` with the variant (`pt-BR`, `en-US`, `es-ES`, `it-IT`, `de-DE` and the others). See [API introduction](/api/introducao).
